Expatrio Global Package Guide: Blocked Account + Insurance for Your German Student Visa

Bank transfer receipt and Expatrio confirmation letter on a desk

To apply for a German student visa, two documents are almost universally required: a blocked account (proof of financial resources) and health insurance. Expatrio's Global Package handles both in one place — it's one of the most popular options for Taiwanese students.

What Is the Expatrio Global Package?

The Expatrio Global Package includes two components:

  • 🏦 Blocked Account (Sperrkonto): A German bank account required for your student visa. Once you transfer money in, it's "locked" — you can only withdraw a fixed monthly amount. This mechanism proves to the German embassy that you have sufficient funds to support yourself throughout your stay.
  • 🏥 Health Insurance: Covers medical expenses during your time in Germany. The coverage period matches your stay — if you're there for six months, you're insured for six months.

Compared to applying for each separately, the Global Package is more cost-effective and keeps everything in one place.

How Much Do You Need to Deposit?

The required amount is set by the German government and adjusted annually, calculated as monthly living expenses × 12 months. Always check the current figure at expatrio.com before applying — don't rely on numbers from old blog posts.

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Register on Expatrio and Choose the Global Package

Go to expatrio.com, create an account, and select the Global Package.

Step 2: Complete Identity Verification (KYC)

Upload your passport and complete the online identity verification. Review typically takes within one business day.

Step 3: Get Bank Transfer Details and Head to the Bank

Once approved, Expatrio provides a German bank account (with IBAN and BIC) for you to wire the funds to from Taiwan.

One thing to know about the bank visit:

No appointment needed — just walk in. But the international wire transfer form requires a lot of handwritten information, and if you make a mistake, you'll need to redo the entire form from scratch. Before going to the bank, write down or screenshot all of Expatrio's transfer details (IBAN, BIC, recipient name, amount) so you can fill in the form directly without searching around.

Bank transfers from Taiwan to Germany typically take around 3 business days.

Step 4: Expatrio Confirms Receipt and Sends Your Confirmation Letter

In my experience, I transferred via Fubon Bank on July 17th and Expatrio showed the funds received that same evening — faster than expected.

The full process from starting the application to receiving the blocked account confirmation letter took just over a week.

Step 5: Use the Confirmation Letter for Your Visa Application

Once you receive the blocked account confirmation letter, it serves as your proof of financial resources for the German student visa application.

Important Notes

Insurance period: The health insurance in the Global Package covers the same duration as your stay in Germany. After arriving, you'll still need to enroll in German statutory health insurance (e.g. TK, AOK) — Expatrio's insurance is a transitional solution, not a replacement.

Transfer currency: Wire in Euros (EUR). Your Taiwanese bank will charge exchange rate margins and handling fees — it's worth comparing rates between banks beforehand.

Recipient name: When filling out the wire transfer, the recipient name should be your own name (not Expatrio), so the payment can be matched to your account.

Start early: The process takes one to two weeks from start to confirmation letter, plus additional waiting time for the visa appointment. Start at least one month before you plan to submit your visa application.

Referral Code

If you haven't signed up yet, feel free to use my referral link — after activating all products in the Global Package, you'll receive €15 back, and I'll get €10. A win for both sides.

> ⚠️ Important: The referral code must be entered before you apply. It cannot be added retroactively.
