How to Register Your Address in Rostock as an Exchange Student (Anmeldung Guide)

What is Anmeldung?

If you're living in Germany — whether for an exchange semester, full degree, or work — you're legally required to register your address with the local authorities. This is called Anmeldung. Once completed, you'll receive an Anmeldebescheinigung (registration certificate), which you'll need for opening a bank account, getting a SIM card, and many other things. It's one of the first admin tasks to get done.

When Does It Need to Be Done?

German law requires you to register within 14 days of arriving at your new address. Don't put it off — sort it out as soon as you're settled in.

What Documents Do You Need?

Just two things:

  • 🛂 Your passport
  • 🏠 Landlord confirmation letter (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung)

The landlord confirmation is a form your landlord fills out to confirm you're living at the address. Ask for it as soon as you move in — you can't complete the Anmeldung without it.

Where to Go?

Head to the Rostock Bürgeramt (residents' registration office, also called Einwohnermeldeamt).

💡 Book an appointment online in advance — walk-in queues can be long, and having an appointment makes the whole process much faster.

Also worth noting: the University of Rostock typically reserves a dedicated registration day for all incoming exchange students, where everyone goes together to the Bürgeramt in a group. Keep an eye on emails from the International Office — if this is offered, it's the easiest way to get it done.

What Happens After?

You'll receive your Anmeldebescheinigung on the spot — an A4 certificate confirming your registered address. Keep it somewhere safe. You'll need it for opening a German bank account, getting a local SIM, and various other admin tasks throughout your exchange.
